VIIRS - Level-1 / Level-0

Overview

The December 2023 original release includes the v2.0 collections for the JPSS-2/NOAA-21 VIIRS Level-1 (L1) products. They include three products each for Calibrated Radiances and Geolocation (that each relate to image-resolution, moderate-resolution, and day-night band resolution).

Earlier releases from August 2021 include the same two-sets of three collections each for NASA VIIRS L1 products for both Suomi NPP VIIRS (v2.0) and NOAA-20 VIIRS (v2.1).

Overview

The VIIRS Suomi NPP (Suomi NPP) Level-0 comprises raw instrument data packets that are used to generate calibrated and geolocated VIIRS Level-1 products. The Earth Observing System Data and Operations System (EDOS) facility, located in the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), is the entity that generates and delivers the Level-0 data to the Science Investigator-led Processing Systems (SIPS) that are responsible for higher-level data production. EDOS generates Production Data Sets (PDS) from the Suomi NPP derived return-link instrument packet data that are in CCSDS https://public.ccsds.org/default.aspx (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) format from either single or multiple Application Process Identifiers (APID), a PDS Construction Record, and a Production Data Set Delivery Record (PDR). Generating PDS generally involves sorting packets by Spacecraft Identification (SCID)/APID, identifying data gaps, producing quality summaries and accounting information, and time-ordering the packets. PDS production data are of two types: either session-based (S-PDS) or time-based (T-PDS). An S-PDS contains instrument or spacecraft packet data for a single downlink (approximately 1 orbit), while a T-PDS contains data for a specified time period that spans 2 hours. The following S-PDS and T-PDS products are available from LAADS Find Data.
